FYI:
The
Milwaukee
Clipper
is 102 years old, is the last surviving U.S. passenger steamship
on the Great Lakes and is a National Historic Landmark. She made her maiden voyage as
Juniata
in 1905.
Wisconsin-Michigan Steamship Co. purchased her in 1940, and converted her into the streamlined ferry
Milwaukee Clipper
.
She could carry up to 900 passengers and 120 automobiles. Sailing from 1941, she operated for 29 years
until the Wisconsin-Michigan Steamship Co. retired in 1970. Laid up at Muskegon for eight years,
she was eventually sold and towed to Chicago's Navy Pier as a floating attraction, renamed
Clipper
.
The Hammond Port Authority bought the ship in 1990 and renamed her
Milwaukee Clipper
,
they attempted to make her into an attraction for the Lake Michigan Marina.
Purchased by a nonprofit group in late 1997, with plans to convert her into
a floating museum and convention center. She is now is berthed at the foot of McCracken Street,
where she is being restored.
